Spain – one of the longest seasons in Europe

The main types of plum exported from Spain are black/dark plums, but there are also red, yellow and green plums. Spain has a long plum season compared to other European suppliers, starting in early May and finishing in September/October. Main production area in Extremadura, but also Murcia, Seville, Lleida and Aragón.

Varieties

Black/dark plums

Strong market demand, good shelf life, attractive dark skin. Varieties like Angeleno, Black Amber, Black Splendor, Friar. Most exported varieties.

Red plum

Bright colour, balanced sweet-acid flavour. Varieties like Red Beaut, Fortune, Santa Rosa, Larry Ann.

Green plum

Very sweet (high brix), smaller and more premium fruit. Varieties like Reina Claudia.

Yellow plum

Mild, sweet flavour, niche but growing demand. Varieties like Golden Japan and Shiro.
