Red Cabbage

September — April

Spain – an important producer of Red Cabbage

Red cabbage is a well-established export brassica in Spain, although production is considerably smaller than white cabbage, broccoli, or cauliflower. Spain is one of the main winter suppliers to Northern Europe, with production concentrated in Murcia, Valencia, Navarra, Castilla y León, and La Rioja. The season starts in September and lasts until April, with limited availability during the summer season from cooler regions.

Varieties

 ( Sep — Apr)
Red cabbage is marketed almost entirely as round red cabbage, with grading based on head size and weight. Spanish growers mainly cultivate F1 hybrids selected for deep internal colour, uniform round heads, long field holding ability and good shelf life. Main varieties are Roxy F1, Red Jewel F1, Rodeo F1, Red Dynasty F1, Ruby Ball F1 and Integro F1.
