Spain – one of Europe’s largest exporters of Peach
Spain is one of Europe’s largest peach exporters. Harvest starts in Andalusia (Seville, Huelva) in April/May, followed by Murcia and Extremadura in May, usually by then with better colour and size, and higher levels of brix. Peak season in June-August, now from the Aragón area, with a good balance of sweetness, firmness and aroma. Late season in August-September from northern Spain, with good sugar levels and slightly softer texture.
Varieties
Yellow flesh peaches (May — Sep)
Yellow/orange flesh. Balanced sweet-acid taste, firm flesh, good shelf life. Used for both fresh and processing. Most popular peach, good for export. Varieties like Rich Lady, Royal Glory, O’Henry.
White peaches (Jun — Aug)
Pale/white flesh, sweeter, lower acidity, floral and aromatic, softer texture. More sensitive, shorter shelf life.
