Fresh Produce Supply Spain
Pointed Cabbage
March — May
A growing export crop in Spain
Pointed cabbage (also known as Hispi cabbage, Sweetheart cabbage, or Cone cabbage) is a premium specialty cabbage with a growing export market from Spain. Although volumes are much lower than white cabbage or broccoli, demand has increased across Northern Europe due to its sweeter flavour, tender leaves, and shorter cooking time. Production is concentrated in Murcia, Navarra, Castilla y León, Valencia, and Catalonia. The season starts in September and lasts until May, with limited availability during the summer season from cooler regions.
Varieties
( Mar — May)
Spanish growers mainly use F1 hybrids developed for uniform pointed heads, sweetness, and shelf life. Main varieties are Caraflex F1, Cape Horn F1, Tourima F1, Dutchman F1, Hispi F1 and Pyramid F1.
