Fresh Produce Supply Spain
Chinese Cabbage
September — April
A speciality export crop in Spain
Chinese cabbage (Napa cabbage, Chinese leaf, or Hakusai) is a well-established specialty export crop in Spain. Although production volumes are much lower than iceberg lettuce or broccoli, Spain is one of Europe’s main winter suppliers, particularly to Northern Europe. Production is concentrated in Murcia, Valencia, Almería, Navarra, and Castilla y León, often alongside pak choi and other Asian vegetables. The season starts in September and lasts until April, with limited availability during the summer season from cooler regions.
Varieties
( Sep — Apr)
Chinese cabbage is marketed mainly by type and head size, rather than by variety. More than 90% of Spanish exports are Napa (Hakusai) type, other types are Mini Napa, Baby Chinese and Flat Chinese.
Spanish growers predominantly use F1 hybrids selected for head uniformity, internal quality, disease resistance, and long shelf life. Main varieties are Bilko F1, Emiko F1, Yuki F1, Manoko F1, Hilton F1 and Enduro F1.
