White Cabbage

September — April

A traditional Spanish export crop

White cabbage (also called green cabbage, round cabbage, or white head cabbage) is one of Spain’s traditional brassica export crops. While export volumes are lower than broccoli and lettuce, Spain is a major winter supplier to European markets, particularly from Murcia, Valencia, Navarra, Castilla y León, and La Rioja. The season starts in September and lasts until April, with limited availability during the summer season from cooler regions.

Varieties

 ( Sep — Apr)
White cabbage is sold mainly in three commercial categories: round white cabbage, large white cabbage and mini cabbage. Round white cabbage accounts for the vast majority of exports. Spanish growers mainly cultivate F1 hybrids selected for compact round heads, high field uniformity, disease resistance and excellent storage. Main varieties are Kilaton F1, Storema F1, Reaction F1, Bronco F1, Candela F1, Expect F1 and Tucana F1.
