Fresh Produce Supply Spain
Butternut Squash
July — March
A fast-growing export vegetable in Spain
Butternut squash is one of Spain’s fastest-growing export vegetables. Spain has become a major supplier to European supermarkets, particularly during the autumn and winter, complementing production from Portugal and overseas origins. Production is concentrated in Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalucía, Extremadura, Valencia, and Castilla y León.
The season starts in July and lasts until March.
Varieties
( Jul — Mar)
Almost all exports consist of the Butternut type (Cucurbita moschata), although they are marketed by size. Spanish growers use modern F1 hybrids selected for uniform pear shape, small seed cavity, deep orange flesh and long storage life. Main varieties are Atlas F1, Pluto F1, Ariel F1, Avalon F1, Hercules F1 and Nirvana F1.
