Kale

November — June

Spain – an important producer of Kale

Kale has become an increasingly important specialty export vegetable in Spain over the last decade, driven by demand from supermarkets and foodservice across Northern Europe. Production is concentrated in Murcia, Navarra, Castilla y León, Valencia, and Andalusia, with the strongest export window during autumn and winter. The season starts in September and lasts until May, with small volumes available also during summer in cooler regions.

Varieties

 ( Nov — Jun)
Kale is marketed primarily by type rather than individual variety. Curly kale is the dominant export type, representing approximately 80–90% of Spain's fresh kale exports. Curly kale varieties include Reflex F1, Starbor F1, Darkibor F1, Winterbor F1 and Redbor F1 (purple curly kale). Other types of kale are Lacinato kale (Tuscan/dinosaur kale) and red kale.
