Spain – an important producer of Fennel

Spain is one of the main winter suppliers of fresh fennel to Europe. Production is concentrated in Murcia, Valencia, Alicante, Almería, and Navarra, taking advantage of Spain’s mild winter climate. The season starts in September and lasts until May, with limited availability during the summer season from cooler regions.

Varieties

Fennel is sold almost exclusively as Florence fennel (bulb fennel). Commercially, buyers rarely specify the cultivar; instead they purchase by bulb size and quality. Main commercial hybrids are Finale F1, Preludio F1, Orion F1, Solaris F1, Perfektion F1, Monty F1 and Selma F1.
