Spanish watermelons are sweet and consistent, with uniform shape and colour, and a good shelf life, which makes them ideal for export. Watermelons are exported in seeded, seedless and mini segments.

Spain is one of Europe’s largest watermelon exporters. Main producing regions are Andalucía (early season), Murcia (mid-season) and Castilla-La Mancha (late season). The watermelon season in Spain is long, starting in March and lasting until September.

Striped

Green striped rind, red flesh, medium to large fruit, both seeded and seedless. Sweet and good for export. Varieties like Crimson Sweet, Boston, Celebration, Melody.

Black

Dark green/black skin, red flesh, both seeded and seedless. Varieties like Sugar Baby, Style, Premium.

Mini

Typically weighing 1.5-3 kg, mostly seedless. Varieties like Mini Love, Extazy, Mielheart.

Yellow

A yellow flesh watermelon, sweet flavour, premium niche segment. Varieties like Yellow Crimson, Yellow Doll, Buttercup.
