Fresh Produce Supply Spain
Romaine Lettuce
September — May
Spain – a leading producer of Romaine
Spain is one of Europe’s largest exporters of romaine lettuce (Cos lettuce), alongside iceberg. Romaine is a key crop for both the fresh market and the ready-to-eat salad industry, with production concentrated in Murcia, Alicante, Almería, Granada, Navarra, and Castilla-La Mancha. Spain supplies European retailers throughout the winter and spring, when production in Northern Europe is limited. The season starts in September and lasts until May, with limited availability during the summer season from cooler regions.
Varieties
( Sep — May)
Exporters classify romaine primarily by product type, size and presentation, rather than by the specific cultivar. Spanish growers mainly cultivate F1 hybrids selected for head uniformity, internal quality, disease resistance and shelf life. Main varieties are Pinocchio RZ, Integral RZ, Thicket, Sparx, Crunchita, Little Gem and Xandra RZ.
