Spain – a leading producer of Iceberg

Spain is the largest exporter of iceberg lettuce in Europe and one of the world’s leading suppliers. More than 70% of Spanish iceberg production is concentrated in Murcia, with additional production in Alicante, Almería, Granada, and Castilla-La Mancha. Spain supplies Europe with iceberg particularly during the autumn, winter, and spring. The season starts in September and lasts until May, with limited availability also during the summer months.

Iceberg lettuce is grown almost exclusively from F1 hybrids. Buyers generally purchase by type, size, and specification, rather than by named variety. Some commercial hybrids are Mirette, Ice Castle, Gaugin, Santos, Aisberg F1, Lugano, SV Ice series and Ballerina.
